Node4

Point of Engagement: PE Backed

Investors: Providence Equity Partners

Outcome

Non-Exec Chairman - Appointing a Microsoft-Native Chair to Accelerate Node4’s Next Phase of Growth

Background

Providence Equity Partners engaged Iperium to support a critical board hire for Node4, a Microsoft Inner Circle, UK based Managed Services Provider operating at the forefront of cloud, data, and AI transformation.

Node4 holds a rare position within the Microsoft ecosystem, recognised within the Inner Circle, an elite group representing the top 1% of Microsoft partners globally. This distinction reflects exceptional performance across Dynamics 365, Power Platform, and AI-led transformation, with privileged access to Microsoft’s product roadmap, leadership, and innovation pipeline.

As the business prepared for its next phase of growth, Providence sought to strengthen the board with a Chair capable of operating at this level of ecosystem influence and complexity.

This was not a typical Non-Executive Chair search.

The brief required a highly specific blend of:

  • Deep Managed Services / IT Services leadership experience
  • Credibility and influence within the Microsoft ecosystem
  • A track record of chairing PE-backed technology businesses through scale and transformation

In practical terms, the mandate was clear:
Find someone who doesn’t just understand Microsoft… but has helped shape it.

The talent pool at this intersection is exceptionally narrow.

At the same time, timing mattered. Node4 was entering a pivotal growth phase, with new leadership being put in place to “drive the next phase of growth” and capitalise on increasing enterprise demand for AI and cloud transformation.

Iperium executed a full-market, global search, mapping:

  • Senior leaders across the Microsoft partner ecosystem
  • Former Microsoft executives with EMEA and global exposure
  • Proven Chairs and NEDs within IT Services and Managed Services environments

From this process, Iperium identified and secured:

Patrick de Smedt

A standout candidate with a uniquely relevant profile:

  • One of Microsoft’s first employees in EMEA
  • Former direct report to Bill Gates
  • Deep, first-hand understanding of Microsoft’s operating model, strategy, and partner ecosystem
  • Proven Chairman across multiple IT Services and technology businesses

This combination of ecosystem credibility + governance experience + growth-stage leadership made him uniquely positioned to support Node4’s ambitions.

Node4 successfully appointed Patrick de Smedt as Chair, alongside the appointment of a new CEO Neil Muller, forming a leadership team designed to accelerate growth.

“We are delighted to welcome Patrick as Chair. His deep experience within the Microsoft ecosystem and proven track record in technology services will be invaluable as Node4 enters its next phase of growth.”

– Michael Vervisch

The appointment strengthened:

  • Board-level strategic alignment with Microsoft
  • Access to ecosystem insight, relationships, and influence
  • Confidence from investors, partners, and customers as Node4 scales its AI and cloud capabilities

Why it worked

1. Precision over volume
This was a highly constrained talent pool. Success came from targeted identification, not broad outreach.

2. True ecosystem understanding
Iperium didn’t just search for “Microsoft experience” we mapped the inner circle of influence within the ecosystem.

3. Alignment to growth phase
The appointment wasn’t just about governance, it was about enabling the next chapter of value creation.

4. Credibility at the highest level
Patrick’s background, spanning early Microsoft leadership through to board-level roles brought instant authority and relevance.

5. Speed without compromise
A complex, niche mandate delivered with the pace expected in private equity environments.
